What happens when you cant "see" or feel  yourself being powerful over your circumstances?

Self-esteem is built upon an unconsious assumption that we have absolute power over our circumstances.  Unfortunately, all of us experience episodes in life where we have, even momentarily, no control over our outcome.  These situations cause disregulation and an inability to look inward and quickly find a known pattern or path back to control.  Panic and anxiety can set in, but stress most certainly does.  And that stress blocks our ability to problem solve effectively.  Situations like these require an understanding of the brain's need to be soothed first and then to systematcially problem solve, all while being aware of the tension between feeling strong and situationally having little or no control.
