How do you choose the right counselor for YOU?
It is important to feel comfortable with the person you choose to talk to in counseling. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to trust sharing your personal experiences, thoughts and feelings with that person.
If you know you a would like to talk to a counselor, but you are trying to decide if I am the right counselor for you- a good way to find out is to make a brief phone call to me, just to hear the sound of my voice. You can either ask me a few questions or tell me a little about why you would like to talk to a counselor.
You don't have to share the entire story- it could just be a few sentences like- I am feeling depressed or not myself or I'm really angry or I'm not getting along with my friends anymore or my husband, or partner and I just wanted to talk to somebody.
The whole point of the phone call is to give you a chance to determine by the sound of my voice if you feel comfortable with me, or if you like what I have to say. You get to decide if I am the right person for you.
Some short questions you might ask me could be - Where is your office located? Do you take cash, check, or credit card? The questions don't really matter, its just to hear the sound of my voice, to decide if you feel comfortable talking to me. Trust yourself. We all have that ability to hear and feel if we trust someone else -its built into our brains!
